Why Hudson Porch Roofs Leak

Hudson porch roofs leak most often where the porch roof meets the wall of the house, and on low-slope porch roofs where water and snow sit instead of running off. That wall joint depends on flashing, and when it fails the water runs down behind the siding and into the porch ceiling.

Many porch roofs are lower in pitch than the main roof, so they drain slowly and hold snow longer. In a western Wisconsin winter, with roughly 45 to 50 inches of snow a year, snow sliding off the main roof can pile onto the porch roof below and sit there for weeks.

Wind finds porch roofs too. When an EF1 tornado crossed between New Richmond and Hammond in July 2021, the wind got under a damaged porch overhang at one house and punched a hole through the back of the roof.

Look up

Check the porch ceiling

Stains or sagging on the porch ceiling near the house wall usually mean the flashing where the two roofs meet has failed.

Signs Your Hudson Porch Roof Needs Work

Your Hudson porch roof needs work when the porch ceiling is stained or sagging, the roofing is worn or blistered, or water drips at the house wall in rain. Most of these get worse with every winter.

Stained Porch Ceiling

Water marks on the ceiling boards show where the roofing or flashing above is letting water through.

Leaks Along the House Wall

Drips or stains where the porch meets the house point to failed flashing at that joint.

Blistered or Worn Roofing

Cracked, blistered or bare spots on a low-slope porch roof mean the covering is near the end of its life.

Sagging or Soft Spots

A roof that dips or feels soft underfoot has wet or rotted decking below the roofing.

Tell us where the water shows and we will find whether it is the roofing, the flashing or both.

Should You Repair or Replace Your Hudson Porch Roof?

You should repair your Hudson porch roof when the leak is at one spot, such as the flashing at the house wall, and replace it when the covering is worn out across the whole roof or the decking has rotted.

Repair fits when

  • The leak is at the wall flashing or one spot
  • The roofing is sound elsewhere
  • The decking is firm
  • The roof has only one layer of roofing

Replacement fits when

  • The covering is cracked or blistered all over
  • The decking is soft or rotted
  • There are already two layers of roofing
  • Leaks keep coming back after repairs

Low-slope porch roofs usually need a low-slope roofing system rather than shingles, such as modified bitumen or rolled roofing, and on a bay or porch roof where looks matter, copper roofing is an option.

What Wisconsin Requires When Reroofing a Porch

Wisconsin's dwelling code allows no more than two layers of roofing, so a porch roof that already has two layers, or whose old roofing is soaked or deteriorated, must be torn off before new roofing goes on. The code also requires flashing around roof openings and at chimney and valley junctions, and other roof coverings must be installed to the manufacturer's instructions.

Snow load matters on a porch roof. The state code sets minimum design snow loads for roofs on new homes at 40 pounds per square foot in St. Croix County and 30 in Pierce County, and a sagging porch roof is a sign its framing should be looked at before new roofing goes on.

In the City of Hudson, new or replacement roofing needs no building permit when there are no structural changes or repairs; rebuilding porch roof framing is structural work. Outside the city, we confirm the permit rules with your local building inspector before work starts.

Who Can Repair or Replace a Porch Roof in Wisconsin?

A contractor holding Wisconsin's Dwelling Contractor certification, with a certified Dwelling Contractor Qualifier, can repair or Replace a Porch Roof in Wisconsin, because that is the credential the state requires of anyone who pulls a building permit for work on a one- or two-family home, and Wisconsin has no roofing-specific license. Hudson Roofing Pros does this work, and when you book with us or anyone else, ask for proof of the credential and of insurance.

Our crew is the same team from the first inspection to the final cleanup, owner Garrett Olson oversees every project, and Erin Olson in the office keeps the scheduling simple. If the leak turns out to be in the main roof above the porch, our roof leak repair work covers that too.

Porch and Patio Roofing FAQs

Why Does My Porch Roof Leak Where It Meets the House?

A porch roof leaks where it meets the house because the flashing at that wall joint has failed or was never installed well. Water runs down the wall behind the siding and into the porch ceiling.

Can a Low-Slope Porch Roof Have Shingles?

A low-slope porch roof is usually better covered with a low-slope system such as modified bitumen or rolled roofing, because water drains slowly off a shallow roof. We look at the pitch before recommending a material.

Can New Roofing Go Over My Old Porch Roof?

New roofing can go over an old porch roof only if there is just one layer and it is not soaked or deteriorated, because Wisconsin's dwelling code allows no more than two layers. Otherwise the old roofing has to come off.

What Does a New Porch Roof Cost?

A new standard porch roof runs about $30 to $160 a square foot nationally, a published range and not a quote. We price your porch after looking at its size, pitch and framing.
